The Tan-Renga Verse Form
by J. Zimmerman.
The Tan-renga is a collaborative Japanese verse form in which a tanka is written jointly by two authors. Typically one author offers the first three phrases of the poem and the other author responds with two phrases.
Its name (from the Japanese) translates as "short connecting poem" or "short linked poem".
Of particular interest are Tan-renga that exhibit the attributes of 'link and shift'.
Some examples in which the author collaborated appeared in a recent issue of A 100 Gourds.
