• Natasha Trethewey's 3rd collection of poems.
• Explores the life resulting from being born to a white woman and a black father in the racially fraught Southeast USA, and the black heritage that she thereby owns.
• Prefatory 1-page poem.
• 3 numbered sections with 10, 4, and 11 poems respectively.
• 3 pages of notes.
• The total of 26 poems (29 if you count each of the four numbered parts of 'Scenes from a Documentary' occupy 37 pages.
• Average = 1.4 pages per poem (or 1.3 ppp).
• The title poem 'Native Guard' is a 10-sonnet sequence with the end line of each sonnet reappearing at least in part as the first line of the subsequent stanza. Thus it is a crown of sonnets.
• About 7 (a little over a quarter) are rhymed, sometimes with slant rhyme.
• Several are in form: a crown of 10 sonnets, solo sonnets, a ghazal, a pantoum.
• Various stanzaic forms including:
